| History:
The Porch Club of Riverton is a NJ Federated Women’s Club
founded in 1890, and is now one of the oldest in New Jersey.
Eight young women originally met on porches as a reading circle
each week. Soon they were joined by others, and in 1895 they
formally organized. Through the Porch Club, Burlington County’s
first Kindergarten in the public school was opened and the first
woman elected to a Board of Education. In October 1900 a State
Congress of Mothers (now known as the PTA) was formed through
their efforts in Riverton. The Porch Club of Riverton continues
to be a “center of thought and action for women”
and its community as stated in its original purpose.
Property
was purchased at Fourth and Howard Streets and ground was broken
in January of 1909 for a clubhouse. The clubhouse is rented
to many groups and individuals for events and meetings throughout
the year. Each year, as a registered non-profit organization,
the Porch Club makes contributions to local and national charities,
as well as State Federation Club projects.
Today,
the Porch Club of Riverton meets on the first Tuesday of each
month, October through June, and departments hold meetings and
plan activities according to their programs. Membership is unlimited
and new members are welcomed after being proposed and endorsed
by a member in good standing.
